What is a doula?
Wikipedia defines the role this way:
"A doula (/ˈduːlə/), also known as a birth companion or post-birth supporter, is a non-medical person who assists a person before, during, or after childbirth, as well as their spouse and family, by providing physical assistance and emotional support."
Within my scope of professional practice as a doula, my role is shaped by you and your partner in how I best support you both. I offer reliable, evidence based resources to help you be informed about your decisions. If you do not have the time or energy to wade through the bounty of prenatal information, you may consider including the childbirth education package to feel confident and prepared for your upcoming experience.
I take the time to get to know you so we can work well as a team. Different women need different support; every family has their own dynamic which I compliment with my services.
So, what can you expect of me as your doula?
I Will STrive to:
Partner with you to support you and your birth team.
Provide continuous labour and birth support to help you experience a satisfying birth as YOU define it, as medically possible.
Take cues to provide comfort measures like movement, touch, or sound to calm, reassure and encourage you and to progress your labour.
Promote positive communication between you and your care providers.
Remind you and your spouse to ask questions during the labour and birth process.
Suggest reliable contacts for pre and postnatal community resources.
I will avoid:
Promising you a perfect labour & birth.
Taking the place of your spouse, partner or other support system.
Telling you how to labour.
Leaving you during labour or birth.
Giving you medical advice.
Intervening with your medical team.
I believe that a woman’s body is incredibly designed and pregnancy is a natural process. Our bodies do amazing things in the midst of a wondrous event and fear is contrary to how your body works best. My desire is for every woman I support to feel respected, encouraged, and satisfied with their experience, regardless of how their baby enters into this world.
As one of the most significant and memorable events in your life, hiring a doula is a small investment with immeasurable benefits .
